Hi, everyone,
I'm Jenny Rickard, the Community Director of Susquehanna Community. I work closely with Beth and the Counseling Center on sexual assault prevention projects, especially outreach in the residence halls and with Residential Life staff like Resident Assistants. Where you stumble,
there lies your treasure."

My name is Brittany Rigoli, graduate assistant at the University Counseling Center.
If there are any of you looking for a great resource to help you through or to understand sexual assault and/or rape, and why/how it happens, and if you feel alone in your experience, the book Flirting With Danger by Lynn M. Phillips is a great read and very informative. I read it during my senior year of undergrad and it really opened my eyes and put into words a lot of things that I could not explain before. It is based off a study that Phillips conducted and contains real accounts from women regarding what she calls "heterorelations". Some of the accounts may be somewhat graphic but I believe that they are necessary in getting the message out to women that they are not alone and that sexual assault/rape happens to anyone and in any situation, under many different circumstances. If you do wish to read this book and/or to discuss it, feel free to contact me at brigoli1@binghamton.edu
I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time.

I just want to thank all the wonderful staff at the couseling center, especially Beth for making me see that no matter how bad things may be today, they are not going to stay that way forever...even if it feels like they will.

A note on resilience...
Resilience is an important part of the healing process, and can be found within each and every person. Although at times it seems like the darkness will never lift, anyone can harbor the strength to get through- we just have to look inside ourselves and have the courage to find it. It is hope that keeps us going.
Tip for today (from "Reach in. Reach Out. Finding Your Resilience" by the National Center for Victims of Crime):
"Keep things in perspective- Look at the broader picture when you face a problem. Accept that change is inevitable and that new circumstances may alter your goals and the course of your life. Learn to distinguish between the things you can and cannot change. If you are overwhelmed by a tragedy, seek support from loved ones and friends. If needed, seek professional help to cope and draw upon your own resilience."
In time your wounds will heal. It may not feel that way now, but in time- you will heal. Give yourself time to FEEL and in the end, you will come to love and appreciate the new you. Embrace her! Thanks Beth ;)
